Your Opinion: Keys to understanding

Dear Editor:

Our primary way of communicating with each other is by the spoken or printed word. Unfortunately, each of us tends to assume that our definition of the words we choose is the same definition that others attach to them. We often depend on the dictionary to prove our point.

But sometimes we forget that in many cases the dictionary itself lists a variety of meanings. Consequently, the result is a lack of clear communication and an argument ensues as each party thinks the other is wrong. Although the words may be familiar to us, words like good, bad, fair, equal, rich, poor, welfare, god, love, compassion (to name a few) have multiple meanings.

While it is in the best interest of all of us to clearly define the words we use, it is just as important for each of us to examine the fundamental values that lie behind our choices. Are we motivated by a desire to promote beliefs and actions that primarily benefit us personally, or do we want to benefit others as well as ourselves?

For example, why would a billionaire, with more than enough money to meet lifetimes of needs, want to eliminate income taxes and promote a "fair tax" on goods and services that would increase the burdens of the poor? What is the meaning of the words he/she uses to promote this action? Is it because the billionaire has a loving heart and wants to use the increased wealth to eliminate poverty? Or does the billionaire assume the poor are expendable because they refuse to work? Perhaps, we need a clearly stated, honest goal behind the billionaire's motive. Until we know, we are not qualified to make an assumption of whether or not to support him/her.

The need to know the motive and goal of this proposed "fair tax" also apply to the lawmakers who are accepting financial support from this billionaire. If they support the idea is it because they believe that they are fulfilling their oath to put the welfare of their constituents above their own personal benefits? If voters are to know what is best, we need to be sure that the lawmakers' motives are in the best interest of all citizens, not just a few self-serving people whose interest does not extend beyond their own well-being.

Clearly stated motives and defined words are crucial to our understanding.
