Dear Editor:
A short letter to clarify Milton Garber's "promoting the general welfare," letter is in order.
Garber is incorrect regarding "Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness," not being in the Constitution, but only in "The unanimous Declaration of the thirteen United States of America." It was incorporated by reference at Article 7.
"The Ratification of the Convention of nine States, shall be sufficient ... Done in Convention by the Unanimous Consent of the States present the Seventeenth Day of September in the Year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and Eighty seven and of the Independence of the United States of America the Twelfth (referring to the twelve July 4ths having passed since the signing of the Declaration of Independence by action of the Second Continental Congress on July 4, 1776) In Witness whereof We have hereunto subscribed our Names ..." Emphasis added.
That said, the Constitution's intent for a limited federal government with strong states' and individual rights has been degraded by all three branches of government.
Starting with Woodrow Wilson, through FDR, and now by the current occupant of the White House, the Constitution has been trampled upon.
We must trend back to the Constitution's original intent in insisting on individual responsibility, promoting the integral family unit, not relying on government and getting government out of our way.
We must have a balanced budget, ridding us of programs and agencies that are better provided at state and local levels, if at all. We must eliminate inhibiting laws and regulations.
The federal judiciary must be self-redirected. The courts' interference, by acting more like a legislature than the judiciary, must stop. Shouldn't the court decide whether laws are constitutional or not, using the Constitution itself and never be the action of judges and justices deciding what they want to say? We believe in the rule of law, not the law of men from the bench or the Oval Office?
This short letter outlines a fix to our country's ills, but it will take strong dedicated leaders. As of late, I see that leadership lacking.
