Your Opinion: Why no Veterans Day observance at Capitol?

Dear Editor:

On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918 the Armistice, an agreement to cease fighting, was signed to end the First World War known as the Great War. The following year at 11 a.m. on Nov. 11 businesses paused to remember those who died during the Great War. Armistice Day is now known as Veterans Day.

I have attended the 11 a.m. Veterans Day celebration held at the Capitol nearly every year since 1982. Even when the chandelier was being repaired the celebration was held at the Capitol and also on Nov. 11, 2001.

This year on Nov. 11 there will not be a celebration at the Capitol.

Why?

This year, 2011, would have been very special: the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of the 11th year.

Please let us know why Veterans Day is not going to be celebrated at the Capitol on 11-11-11-11.
