WASHINGTON (AP) - Nicklas Backstrom scored the tying goal with 42 seconds left in regulation, then added the game-winner at 2:18 of overtime to lift the Washington Capitals to a 5-4 comeback victory over the Anaheim Ducks on Tuesday night.
The Capitals trailed 3-0 in the second period and 4-2 with 10:47 left in regulation before rallying. It was 4-3 when Washington pulled goaltender Tomas Vokoun in the final minute, and Backstrom hammered home the rebound of a shot by Jason Chimera to force the extra session.
Washington improved to 6-0 at home and ended a two-game skid.
Teemu Selanne had two goals and two assists for the Ducks, who have lost three straight. Jonas Hiller stopped 35 shots. Now in his 20th season, the 41-year-old Selanne leads the Ducks in goals (five) and assists (nine). He has three goals and eight assists in his last six games.
Joel Ward, Dennis Wideman and Troy Brouwer scored for the Capitals, who remained unbeaten in the United States following losses at Edmonton and Vancouver.
Corey Perry scored a power-play goal for Anaheim at 9:13 of the third period for a 4-2 lead.
Bruins 5, Senators 3
BOSTON (AP) - Johnny Boychuk and Daniel Paille scored 47 seconds apart to break open a tie game in the third period, and Boston ended a three-game losing streak by beating Ottawa.
Chris Kelly had a goal and an assist, and Zdeno Chara had two assists for the defending Stanley Cup champions, who were 3-7 in October - the worst mark in the Eastern Conference.
The Bruins also snapped the Senators' six-game winning streak.
Boston took a 3-2 lead on goals by Patrice Bergeron and Chris Kelly, then put in two more after Ottawa's Jared Cowen tied it with his first NHL goal with 14:56 left.
That was a big enough cushion for Tim Thomas (4-4), who made 23 saves.
Craig Anderson (6-3) stopped 36 shots for Ottawa, which hadn't lost since Oct. 18. Nick Foligno finished with a goal and two assists, and Stephane DaCosta had a goal and an assist.
Hurricanes 4, Lightning 2
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - Jeff Skinner and Chad LaRose had two goals each, lifting Carolina over Tampa Bay.
Skinner, last season's NHL rookie of the year, has six goals and 12 points in 12 games this season.
Carolina improved to 1-2-1 against Southeast Division rivals. Tampa Bay had won three straight on the road against Carolina by a combined score of 15-5.
Carolina's Cam Ward (5-2-2) made 27 saves. Tampa Bay counterpart Dwayne Roloson (2-3-1) stopped 26 shots.
Hurricanes forward Jussi Jokinen sustained an apparent injury to his left knee early in the third period and didn't return.
Brett Connolly, with his first NHL goal, and Teddy Purcell scored for the Lightning.
Wild 2, Red Wings 1, OT
DETROIT (AP) - Devin Setoguchi's power-play goal 1:33 into overtime gave Minnesota a comeback win over Detroit.
It was the fifth consecutive loss for the Red Wings, who were beaten 1-0 by the Wild in Minnesota on Saturday night.
Mikko Koivu also scored for Minnesota, and Josh Harding stopped 36 shots.
Nicklas Lidstrom netted the lone goal for the Red Wings, who got 25 saves from Jimmy Howard.
Canucks 5, Flames 1
CALGARY, Alberta (AP) - Vancouver defenseman Alexander Edler scored and added two assists while Roberto Luongo made 28 saves to help the Canucks rout the Flames.
Chris Higgins, Alexandre Burrows, Daniel Sedin and Cody Hodgson also scored for Vancouver (6-5-1), which kicked off a six-game road trip.
Alex Tanguay scored the lone goal for Calgary (4-5-1), ruining Luongo's shutout bid with 32 seconds left in the game.
Luongo was coming off a miserable October in which he went 3-3-1 with a 3.54 goals-against average and a meager .869 save percentage.
