'Pirates 4' breaks records overseas

LOS ANGELES (AP) - "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides" has earned more than $400 million globally in less than a week, including an international record of $256.3 million in its weekend debut. This is more than triple the gross in North America, where the movie has been performing below expectations.

Demonstrating the film's broad international appeal, Capt. Jack and his mates generated the biggest opening day and the biggest opening weekend of all time in Russia, where it has already earned more than the entire run of the previous installment, "At World's End."

Another global blockbuster, "Fast Five," is roaring toward the $500 million mark in worldwide revenue. Earning $19.1 million in 46 international territories, the film has proven a foreign favorite with no signs of slowing down.

Looking at eighth position, Woody Allen's "Midnight in Paris" had a terrific second weekend in three international territories, with $3.6 million and a global total of $11.9 million. The latest from the widely acclaimed director continued to delight overseas audiences and had an incredibly strong debut in North America this past weekend, generating nearly $100,000 per theater in six locations.
