Man trying to escape law swept away in Mo. lake

HOLLISTER, Mo. (AP) - Taney County officials say a man who was trying to elude law enforcement is missing after he tried to swim across flood-swollen Lake Taneycomo.

Western Taney County officials say the man disappeared Wednesday after being swept away by a strong current in the lake. His identity has not been confirmed.

Taney County Sheriff Jimmie Russell says deputies were called by a homeowner because the suspect was in his car. When officers arrived, the man ran and went over an embankment. He was trapped on a steep embankment and yelling that he was injured.

Firefighters were preparing a rope rescue when the man intentionally went into the water and tried to swim away.

The Springfield News-Leader reports that search and rescue efforts by several groups did not find the man.
