Employees from Community Newspaper Holdings Inc.'s headquarters in Birmingham, Ala., are en route to tornado-stricken Joplin, Mo., to assist Joplin Globe staffers as they continue to cover the event and produce the daily paper.
At least 20 newspaper employees have lost their homes as a result of the storm, Keith Ponder, CNHI's senior vice president and Sun Belt division manager, told News & Tech.
"The newspaper building has sustained some storm-related damage, but our local team has been adversely impacted on a personal level," Ponder said.
"The Globe team has done exemplary work under difficult circumstances. In spite of their own losses, several of these amazing people were at The Globe contributing to producing this morning's edition and working to provide vital information to the Joplin community in this difficult time."
The Globe is located in downtown Joplin.
Press vendor King Press is also based in Joplin, about 13 blocks north of the heavily damaged St. John's Regional Medical Center. Calls placed to King by News & Tech weren't answered.
