The Fatima boys and girls and the California and St. Elizabeth girls were the only area teams able to record team points during an abbreviated first day of action at the Class 1 and 2 Track and Field Championships.

The championships got under way at 11 a.m. Friday at Dwight T. Reed Stadium, but action was halted at 1:27 p.m. due to lightning in the area. Only five field events were completed, as well as two track final races and eight of the preliminary running events. Action was finally called for the day at 3:22 p.m.

The best individual finish from an area performer came from Fatima's Tanner Buschmann in the Class 2 boys discus, as he came in third with a heave of 154-8, just two inches out of second place. Chase Ewing of Carrollton won the event with a Class 2 record mark of 173-11, one inch better than the effort of Lafayette County's Tim Opfer in 2007.

Also recording a third-place finish was Fatima in the Class 2 girls 4x800-meter relay. The team of Morgan Bax, Brianna Kempker, Maria Luebbert and Alexis Peters finished in a time of 9:53.05.
