Mo. state Rep. Leonard Hughes owes ethics fines

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) - The Missouri Ethics Commission has fined Rep. Leonard Hughes IV, a four-term Democrat from Kansas City, for problems with his latest campaign report.

The commission confirmed Wednesday that Hughes owes a $1,600 fine. The Kansas City Star reports that he filed a quarterly report on Tuesday, 32 days after the April 15 deadline. And commission officials say the form was not filled out correctly.

The commission has fined Hughes a total of $19,090 in fees and fines between 2006 and 2010. The debts prevented him from taking office in January last year. He was seated in February after family members helped him pay the fines.

Hughes did not immediately return a call to his office from The Associated Press on Thursday.
