Cicadas invade Mid-Missouri

Two hard maple trees in a Jefferson City yard offer the perfect spot for cicadas to leave their exoskeletons and, later, their eggs. These 13-year cicadas (Brood XIX) appeared in May and June of 2011, including at this residence on Scenic Drive. Cicadas on a 17-year cycle (Brood X) will appear in 2021 in the eastern United States.

Betty Boes awoke Wednesday morning to find an army invading her yard.

A legion of cicadas was popping out of her lawn in droves, then making their way to the nearest tree.

"There are gobs of them out there," she said.
