SW Missouri groups ask MoDot to delay closings

JOPLIN, Mo. (AP) - Several southwest Missouri cities are asking the state highway department to delay a vote on closing three highway offices in the region.

The Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission is scheduled to vote June 8 on closing offices in Joplin, Willow Springs and Macon.

Joplin, Webb City, Carthage and the Harry S. Truman Coordinating Council are asking the department to delay the vote for 90 days to reconsider the plan.

The Joplin Globe reports Wednesday that the Missouri Farm Bureau issued a statement saying the closings could have serious repercussions for rural Missouri. It says the offices help rural areas with services such as maintenance and snow removal.
