Jury selection continues in Mumbai terror trial
Tuesday, May 17, 2011
CHICAGO (AP) — Jury selection is under way in the federal terrorism trial of a Chicago businessman accused of helping plan the deadly 2008 Mumbai terrorist attacks.
Nearly 100 potential jurors have filled out lengthy questionnaires asking about their backgrounds and topics surrounding the trial of defendant Tahawwur Rana (tuh-HOW’-ur RAH’-nah). He’s accused of providing cover for a former school classmate to scout out sites in Mumbai for the rampage that killed more than 160 people.
On Tuesday, potential jurors will answer more questions in open court. Twelve jurors and six alternates will be chosen.
Jury selection is expected to last through Thursday. Opening statements are expected Monday.
Rana is also accused of helping plan an attack that never took place on a Danish newspaper that printed cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad.
