SIKESTON, Mo. (AP) - The rivers may be receding in southeast Missouri, but flooding persists, and Interstate 55 remains a concern.
The Southeast Missourian reports that backwater from St. Johns Bayou continues to inch up along a two-mile stretch of I-55 near Sikeston. Missouri Department of Transportation crews have added to the layers of sandbags that run from mile markers 58 to 60.
The newspaper reported Friday that water was under the sandbags in some areas and the road was slightly wet. For southbound traffic, one lane has been closed for the two-mile stretch for nearly a week.
Five pumps provided by the Army Corps of Engineers are sending water back to the Mississippi River, but MoDOT leaders say it isn't enough to make a significant difference.
