One of the items that will be introduced to the Jefferson City Council on Monday night will be a measure that will place the renewal of the city half-cent sales tax on the August ballot.
While the exact details of all of the projects that will be included with the sales tax have not yet been determined, the council must act on the issue at this meeting in order to make the May 24 deadline for the August ballot.

NO ! ! ! Not after they absconded with $800,000 plus in property taxes for the ambulance service that was conveniently converted to 'public safety' funds. Not sure where that money went. Cole County took over the ambulance service with their half cent sales tax. JC just kept this little property tax windfall. That money should have been rebated back to the JC property owners. Never, ever vote to continue these 'Capital Improvement ' taxes again. Yes, somtimes these taxes are used for needed infrastucture improvements, but also give city and county administrators funds for goofy things such as the Dix Road Loop, Adrians Peninsula, Binder Lake Yacht Storage, Uptown Revitalization, West Stadium roundabouts, Convention Centers (studies) and so on and on. There are projects that are wanted and projects that are NEEDED ! Spealing of Cole County, does the Sheriff still have pending litigation with county administration regarding funds taken from the jail tax?

FIX THE STREETS.
I wish they would quit wasting so much money on these goofy projects and for hiring consultants.
JC Public Works Dept used to keep the city streets in good condition with frequent overlays each summer on the rough streets. Now the streets are getting very rough, have potholes, and cracking pavement, and they only overlay a few streets downtown in the summer.
When are they going to fix these horrible streets? Some streets are so rough from shfting pavement and utility cuts that were improperly repaired.
Since the city has not told us why they are letting the streets get in such bad shape, maybe NT could do an investigation and get us some answers. Street maintenance in this town has certainly changed over the last 10 years or so.

Parks and Wreck Dept. obviously doesn't have enough money since many of the parks grounds and facilities are in such poor shape. The don't seem to be able to do much maintenance.

VOTE NO. The council has enough money and cannot be trusted with more until they can show that they won't keep wasting it on mud tunnels, Island plans, and a hotel/conference center that no one wants.
JCPS will soon be coming to us for a huge bond issue to rebuild the high school.
The library will want more money for an expansion.
The Handicapped taxes have not been raised in years, and our services for handicapped kids are very poor in this community.

Anti-tax sentiment notwithstanding, this would be an extension of an existing tax and will continue to be needed. Vote YES, and then go to the meetings and make the city pay attention to YOUR needs. Growl, and if they don't hear you, bite with your vote, but we need the revenue extension. Vote YES.

it seems like the Council is saying, to make sure we are spending tax money right, we need more money. where is the accountability?

asb, It seems to me that the city hasn't paid attention to the citizens needs, and therefore, this is the time to bit with our vote. The vote against the tax, that is.
