Your Opinion: View on county sales tax #1

Dear Editor:

The self-serving nature of the sneaky (Cole County half-cent) sales tax proposed continues to be evident. The chairman of the committee to pass the sneaky tax is Mike Bates. Mr. Bates is part of Central Missouri Professional Services which presents itself as an engineering company offering a variety of services such as land surveying construction, materials testing and more on their web site.

CMPS has by its own account been involved in most of the major construction projects in Central Missouri for the past 35 years. Mr. Bates no doubt expects to pocket some of the sneaky tax money from the construction.

The sneaky tax favors higher income people. The lower a person's income the higher percentage of income they pay in sales tax. Now we have a person who will profit being out front drumming up support for it. He is also active in the Jefferson City Chamber of Commerce, an organization which has recently been given money by the Cole County Commission. The Chamber of Commerce should not be getting hand-outs of taxpayers' money to indirectly finance a campaign to increase taxes 22 million dollars.

It is time that the middle class voters of Cole County stand up and say no to Marc Ellinger and the self-serving Cole County Commission and demand that all of Cole County citizens be served equally and not tailor its proposals to the financial elite.

Vote no on the sneaky tax issue in June.
