ROCHESTER, N.Y. (AP) — A sport utility vehicle careered off a city street and onto an athletic field where dozens of children were playing kickball, killing a 7-year-old boy and injuring an 8-year-old girl, police said Tuesday.
The driver lost control Monday afternoon near a community center in Rochester, in western New York, and may have been suffering from a medical condition, police spokesman Officer Stephen Scott said.
Federal patient privacy law bar authorities from specifying details about the 51-year-old driver’s health, such as whether he suffers from epilepsy or a heart condition.
Witnesses told police they saw the SUV traveling erratically along a street before it veered onto the field at around 4:30 p.m. The SUV ran into the two second-graders, who were standing near a baseball diamond, and then plowed through a metal fence and a parked minivan and flipped over, Scott said.
The boy who died was identified as Sahmir Williams, who loved sports and videogames.
The girl, Kaili Garcia, was in satisfactory condition at a hospital Tuesday, a spokeswoman there said. The driver, James Bradley, who had a head injury, also was in satisfactory condition, she said.
Ninth-grader Chermaisha Cox said about 30 children were playing a pickup game of kickball when Bradley’s vehicle ran across the field.
“We’ve never seen anything like his happen,” she told the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle newspaper. “It was a flash out of nowhere.”
