Arrow Rock to celebrate artist Bingham's birth

Historians and art lovers will gather at mid-Missouri's Arrow Rock state historic site this weekend for a bicentennial celebration of artist George Caleb Bingham's birth.

The frontier artist was born on March 20, 1811, and lived in the Saline County village where his home remains a historic landmark.

The nonprofit Friends of Arrow Rock is holding a daylong symposium and fundraiser Saturday called "Bingham in the Boonslick." The event costs between $75 and $125 per person and takes place at the Arrow Rock Lyceum Theatre.

Speakers will include curators from the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City and the State Historical Society in Columbia. A new exhibit of Bingham's art opens on Saturday and will remain on display at the historic site through July.
