Corps cancels March pulse on Missouri River

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) - High river flows from spring snowmelt prompted the Army Corps of Engineers to cancel its March pulse of extra water meant to help an endangered fish in the Missouri River

The release of extra water below Gavins Point Dam at Yankton is meant to replicate a natural spring rise that prompts the pallid sturgeon to spawn.

The corps said Monday that the Missouri River is already high at three downstream points and the two-day spring pulse is being canceled to keep from raising the river level even more.

The corps said it will evaluate river levels before deciding whether to conduct a planned pulse in May.
