LU plans to sell 'Freeman Farm'

Lincoln University announced Thursday that the school's curators voted Wednesday to sell the "Freeman Farm" in southern Callaway County.

The farm covers about 200 acres of Missouri River bottomland between Missouri 94 and East Mokane Road, about 5 1/2 miles east of U.S. 54 and the ABB plant.

"We plan to sell it by auction," said Steve Meredith, dean of LU's Agricultural and Natural Sciences department. "We're going to try to do it as soon as we can, so that whoever purchases it has an opportunity to get crops in for this year."

The property is one of three research farms LU operates as part of its federal land-grant mission.

But, Meredith said, the farm is suited best for growing crops, while Lincoln's research focus is on "small ruminant" animals - sheep and goats.
