Pro-life training for sidewalk counseling slated
Wednesday, March 23, 2011
A former director of a Planned Parenthood clinic in southeast Texas, Abby Johnson will visit Mid-Missouri on April 4-5.
Johnson will lead a training session on "sidewalk counseling" from 6-9 p.m. April 4 in Jefferson City at the Cathedral of St. Joseph undercroft, 2215 W. Main St. A cost of $25 will include a CD and workbook.
The techniques are designed to help anyone with the pro-life belief to express their views anywhere, not just standing in front of a Planned Parenthood office.
Johnson, who recently released the book “Unplanned,” said she had a “change of heart” after watching an abortion in September 2009, quitting her job and joining the pro-life group, 40 Days for Life, which had been praying outside the facility.
Following a Pro-Life Action Day Rally at the Missouri Capitol on April 5 where Johnson will be the keynote speaker, she will sign books from 1:30-3 p.m. at the St. Peter Church Selinger Center, 212 Broadway.

What good are sidewalks when joggers and bike riders prefer to do their leisure/athletic activity at all hours of the day, in the driving lanes of the roadway, when the sidewalk/path is right next to the roadway? I kid you not...I was driving home recently on S. Country Club, there are sidewalks, it was midnight and very little moonlight, had just looked to my left and turned to look forward on the roadway and there is three people in my lane walking in the road along the gutter area! Now, if I was not paying attention I could easily have bowled them all over like pens. What are people thinking? Also, why do Bike riders insist on riding in the morning and evening rush hours traffic when there are sidewalks and bike trails? And no these people are not commuting via bikes, they are in their skin tight outfits with bug helmets on!

Maybe they are going to do this on the bike bridge?
Of course the bike bridge might work better if we had bike lanes on the city streets....

That structure should not be called a bike bridge. It would work better for bikes if it was wider, straighter, and extended to the end of the highway bridge. It could have been a great place to watch the sand dredge pump sand out of the river bed if it was on the other side of the highway bridge, and you liked that kind of thing.
Still you have a great convergence of ideas! It would make a great place for the so-called Right-to-Lifers to do their so-called sidewalk counseling.

you uppity people and your bikes. why can't you just burn oil like the rest of us? when you get in your suv and drive 3 blocks to the grocery store you don't need sidewalks

When I was working I often bicycled to/from work in bicycling attire not in my work clothes. Perhaps these folks are commuting. I prefer to ride at the edge of the road as I have learned that car drivers don't pay much attention to what is on the sidewalk when entering/leaving a driveway or parking lot. Also, many times the sidewalk in broken up and full of glass (where car drivers have tossed their empty beer bottles).

Well, when I rode as a youngster and teen I was told that when cars come pull off to the shoulder. Now, I understand you riders point of view. with traffic the way it is in the mornings and evening, I do not know if many of you are aware that you are impeding traffic when there are lines behind you on two lane roadways trying to get around you while having to dodge oncoming traffic in the opposite direction. It makes for a horrible nervous situation for people trying to get to work and then having to figure out how to get around the bikers. Maybe nothing can be done but we are not living in China or India yet with rickshaws, and bikes everywhere. Hopefully we never will have that type of utter congestion. Just wish bikers would be a little more considerate and pull over and off the roadway when there is intense traffic in both directions.
