Ideas for proposed Jefferson City rec center emerge
Wednesday, March 23, 2011
The cost and scope of a proposed city-run multipurpose building is starting to become clearer, with as many as four basketball courts, an indoor aquatic leisure center and a construction pricetag of more than $22.9 million.
The Jefferson City Parks and Recreation Commission recently met with members of the park resources committee and the steering committee for the multipurpose building project, as well as a consultant with Ballard*King & Associates to discuss the project.
Consultant Darin Barr identified 10 features that residents said they would like to see in the building.

Combine this project with the conference center and build one big very nice dual-purpose facility to serve both purposes. This could be a very nice project to serve our city residents and businesses well-- if done right- this could be a very adaptable and useful facility to be proud of.
Spend our tax dollars wisely.

How would a conference center with four basketball courts, a large swimming pool, and eight other consultants' wet dream features amount to spending our tax dollars wisely? A conference center does not need those features - a conference center needs at least one large auditorium and lots of space for meeting rooms.
Some kinds of projects are just not compatible. For what it's worth, "one big very nice" anything is going to come with a one big very ugly price ag.

Also needs multipurpose ampitheater with folding walls that can open up and seat about a thousand. Needs indoor multi-purpose arena that can be set up with seating for at least 5,000 for concerts, rodeos, car shows, theatric productions, trade shows, etc.
You know they are going to spend our tax dollars on both of these projects, and that both will be "too little, too late" for what is actually needed. Why not combine forces and build something big enough for the future and build something nice. Economies of scale from combining resources of two smaller projects would be more efficient and give us more bang for our taxpayer buck.

Your comments relate to conference center needs, and are still not suitable add-ons for a rec center.

we sometimes disagree but on this one you are absolutely right. In an economically stressed time, the city should concentrate on providing basic city services and forget all this spend spend spend, conference centers, rec centers etc, tunnels to a flooded island. If these are useful projects the private sector will provide them if viable. People are sick and tired of governmental nannies spending tax payers money like candy!

rms, I am not sure about the nanny government angle on this one. It seems like some segment of the business community wants this one, but they don't want to pay for it with their own money, no bank would lend money on such a white elephant, and you can't even sell bonds without a reliable source of funding to pay off the bonds. So they look at us, the taxpayers, and say "...hey, sailor..."

Yes, tonto bad choice of words on the Nanny oops!

ummm.... is there something wrong with the YMCA? So why does the city need to spend SO much money on something that is a duplicate? It almost seems like another "tunnel to no-where" but that's another boondoggle.

I don't understand why the good people of JC want a facility to give them something to do when all they do is complain about nothing to do when they don't take advantage of what is here...what percentage of the JC population uses the ice rink, or the skating rink, or the bowling alley, or for that matter what percentage of the JC population uses the YMCA? Only after it is gone...then they start whining about it being gone and just can't figure it out, and hope somebody (perferably a JC native) takes it over....aha I think I just answered my own questions. Never mind then.... Oh, one more thing....bike riders you rock. At least they are getting off their duff and doing something other than complaining....and making the most of their own abilities and not waiting around for somebody, anybody to make their lives more fun.... Just my thoughts!!!!

You all want something to do, huh?? Good call on banning the riverboat casino. . . it's not like that would've been extremely fun or provided any major revenues or anything like that. Oh, and thanks for the smoking ban, too - because we all know that everyone who goes to the bars hates smoking and the revenues from bars are just going to skyrocket now that they've become family friendly and all. . . freaking geniuses.

Not quite sure what your trip is....It is like the TV if you don't like the program hit the clicker, likewise if you don't gamble don't go but don't judge and press your beliefs on them. If you don't like smoking don't go to those places that allow smoking and if you don't drink don't go to a place that serves alcohol. Family freindly only means all are welcome not just drinkers. There is such a thing as social drinking. PC and governments or advocacy groups have NO business telling private businesses how to run or conduct their business's. Until the government or these groups own put their own money on the line and pay the tax's on the enterprises they want to regulate get out of the way of free enterprise. The business enterprise will succeed based on its patronage or lack thereof!
