Your Opinion: Time to lead, be accountable

Dear Editor:

All politicians say they are pro-education. If so why do the Cole County elected officials want the students of Blair Oaks to pay for their mistake. This is happening at a time when the state of Missouri is cutting funding for all public schools throughout the state, including Blair Oaks.

Blair Oaks has been recognized by the state with Distinction in Academic Performance for seven consecutive years. Blair Oaks has spent less per student than any other school district in Missouri for four consecutive years. These two characteristics lead me to believe that the residents of Blair Oaks district are getting efficient use of their money. During these tough economic times, the school has found ways to achieve more with less, yet the county officials want our students to clean up their mess and pay for their mistakes. As a Blair Oaks taxpayer and grandparent of an honor roll student, I question why we should pay for mistakes within the Cole County Courthouse.

If the county is serious about correcting their problem then let the auditors calculate all the money paid over the 20-year period and then redistribute it all correctly.

Cole County government should pay back its share since they overpaid themselves in excess of a million dollars. All entities who have been overpaid within the last 20 years should morally pay back their full overpayment. If we are sincere about correcting this problem, then let's not look at just three years. Let's look at all 20 years. As a business owner and a farmer, I must stand responsible for all my mistakes so let Cole County government do the same.
