Your Opinion: School breakfasts ‘irresponsible’

Dear Editor;:

“Off to a good start,” your above-the-fold article and picture on March 7 is a prime example of what is wrong with this country. The article fully explains the over-stepping of government responsibility and constitutional mandates on all levels.

It is also so very wrong on other aspects. While it is not discriminatory at Thorpe Gordon, it is with respect to all other Jefferson City Public Schools and all other private and parochial and homeschooled kids, not that I would be in favor of expanding this program, God forbid.

Where is the money for this coming from? I will tell you it is not from a state or federal grant program. It is from taxpayers, taxpayers who are paying for education, but are instead supporting the social welfare system. This is an example of highjacking education funding to the irresponsible Department of Education. It has to stop.

It is also wrong at the basic family unit level. It is not the government’s responsibility to raise and provide for family requirements.

If you can not provide for your family adequately, then just maybe you shouldn’t have children. You may think this is a callous viewpoint. Continued shrinking of parental responsibility ultimately reinforces a society that is ever more dependent on government, a move steady to a socialist state.

So we freedom-loving citizens should not pat ourselves on the back for providing free meals to the lesser privileged and those along that take advantage of this program, but we should point those to other non-government social welfare.

Stop the theft of taxes for education to support social welfare.
