MONTREAL (AP) - Marcus Johansson scored his second goal of the game 6:43 into the third period, Mike Knuble added Washington's second power-play goal and the Capitals extended their winning streak to nine games with a 4-2 victory over the Montreal Canadiens on Tuesday night.
Johansson, who also scored a power-play goal 1:06 into the game, took Alexander Ovechkin's centering pass and put a backhand shot past Carey Price for his 11th goal of the season to give Washington its third and final one-goal lead.
Knuble added an insurance goal with his 17th with 3:07 left in the third.
Braden Holtby, who was named the NHL's first star of the week on Monday, stopped 24 shots for his fifth straight win and Brooks Laich also scored for the Capitals.
Andrei Kostitsyn and Travis Moen scored, and Price made 37 saves for the Canadiens.
Sharks 6, Stars 3
DALLAS (AP) - Ryane Clowe scored the tiebreaker in the opening two minutes of the final period, Torrey Mitchell added an insurance goal 1:40 later, and the San Jose Sharks rallied from a two-goal deficit.
Dany Heatley and Joe Thornton had two goals each, including empty-netters in the final 1:08, and Joe Pavelski contributed four assists for the Sharks, 10-2-2 in their last 14 games.
Jamie Benn had a power play goal and two assists, Toby Petersen netted a short-handed goal, and Mike Ribeiro scored at even strength for Dallas.
With the score even at 2, Pavelski stole the puck from Dallas defenseman Jeff Woywitka and passed to Clowe, who was speeding up the middle and beat Kari Lehtonen at 1:51.
Kings 4, Predators 2
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Anze Kopitar and Dustin Brown each had a goal and an assist, and Los Angeles wrapped up the franchise's first sweep of a four-game road trip.
Alec Martinez and Wayne Simmonds also had goals as the Kings won the season series with Nashville 3-1. Brown sealed the victory with an empty-netter with 62 seconds left.
Jonathon Blum and J.P. Dumont each scored for Nashville.
The Predators came in trailing fifth-place Los Angeles by only three points in the tight Western Conference, but they snapped a two-game winning streak and missed out on a chance to move from ninth into one of the top eight spots.
Nashville outshot the Kings 32-18 but just couldn't beat Jonathan Bernier, who has been in net in all four games this season against the Predators.
Penguins 5, Senators 1
OTTAWA (AP) - Tyler Kennedy and Jordan Staal each had a goal and an assist.
Chris Kunitz had three assists for the Penguins, who also got goals from Ben Lovejoy, Matt Cooke and Zbynek Michalek.
The Senators have now lost two straight after their three-game winning streak was snapped in Buffalo on Sunday.
Ryan Shannon scored for the Senators. Ottawa's Craig Anderson allowed four goals for the second straight game. He made 36 saves while Pittsburgh backup Brent Johnson turned aside 21 of 22.
Paul Martin and Dustin Jeffrey had two assists each as the Penguins.
Hurricanes 1, Sabres 0
BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) - Cam Ward stopped 40 shots - including 22 in the first period - to help the Carolina Hurricanes creep closer to playoff contention.
Brandon Sutter scored in the final minute of the first period, and the Hurricanes snapped a four-game winless streak (0-3-1). With 74 points, ninth-place Carolina moved to within two points of the Sabres for the Eastern Conference's eighth and final playoff spot with 3 1/2 weeks left in the regular season.
The Sabres had their chances, outshooting the Hurricanes 40-33 despite being shut out for the fifth time this season. Buffalo dropped to 7-3-2 in its past 12 games and fell two points behind the New York Rangers, who moved into seventh place after beating the Islanders 6-3 earlier in the evening.
Bruins 3, Blue Jackets 2, SO
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Tuukka Rask stopped all three Columbus attempts and rookie Tyler Seguin scored the only shootout goal and end Boston's season-worst four-game losing streak.
Rask made 34 saves through overtime, and David Krejci and Rich Peverley scored regulation goals for Boston, which won the 2,800th game in the history of the 87-year-old franchise.
Grant Clitsome and Scottie Upshall scored for Columbus, which has lost eight of nine to all but fall out of playoff contention in the Western Conference. Steve Mason made 27 saves.
The Bruins entered as the third seed in the East, only two points ahead of Northeast Division rival Montreal.
Flyers 3, Panthers 2
SUNRISE, Fla. (AP) - Jeff Carter scored two goals in the second period and the Philadelphia Flyers beat the Florida Panthers 3-2 Tuesday night.
Scott Hartnell also scored for the Flyers and Brian Boucher made 20 saves. The win was the Flyers' third in eight games but they maintained a one-point lead over Washington in the Eastern Division.
Stephen Weiss and Dmitry Kulikov scored for the Panthers. Tomas Vokoun stopped 28 shots.
Philadelphia tied the game at 2 on Carter's first goal at 4:43 of the second. Florida's Darcy Hordichuk lost control of the puck between the circles in front of the Panther net. Carter grabbed it, turned and fired the puck into the net.
Rangers 6, Islanders 3
NEW YORK (AP) - Bryan McCabe had a goal and an assist, and the Rangers scored three times on a potent power play to win the latest New York-New York matchup.
Brandon Prust netted a short-handed goal, and Erik Christensen scored on the power play in a dominating first period in which the Rangers grabbed a 2-0 lead and took 21 shots.
Ryan Callahan, Marian Gaborik, and McCabe scored in a span of 7:40 in the second as the Rangers took control again after the Islanders tied it. The Rangers returned home for the first time in more than a week, following a 1-1 trip to California, and recorded 47 shots in winning for the fourth time in five games.
Devils 4, Thrashers 2
NEWARK, N.J. (AP) - Rookie Jacob Josefson scored early in the third period and the hard-charging New Jersey Devils rallied from a two-goal deficit.
Travis Zajac, Patrik Elias and Ilya Kovalchuk also scored as the Devils improved to 23-3-2 in their last 28 games and moved past the .500 mark (33-32-4) for the first time this season.
Martin Brodeur had 18 saves, stopping a break-in by Blake Wheeler and a shot in close by Bryan Little in the final minute as New Jersey jumped from 12th place in the Eastern Conference to 10th with 13 games left in the regular season.
The Devils also got the benefit of having an apparent tying goal by Evander Kane waved off with 37.4 seconds remaining because of a high stick.
Coyotes 4, Flames 3
CALGARY, Alberta (AP) - Keith Yandle and Michal Rozsival scored 19 seconds apart early in the third period.
Yandle put Phoenix up 3-1 with his 11th goal at 1:53 of the third when his centering pass deflected in off the knee of Flames defenseman Jay Bouwmeester.
The Coyotes increased their lead to three when Roszival's point shot went through a crowd and beat Flames goalie Miikka Kiprusoff.
Calgary bounced back on Mikael Backlund's power-play goal less than a minute later, and with momentum on their side, the Flames crept within one on Alex Tanguay's goal at 9:28.
However, Ilya Bryzgalov had 24 saves.
Lee Stempniak and Eric Belanger also scored for Phoenix. Olli Jokinen scored for Calgary.
