BONNE TERRE, Mo. (AP) - Dozens of dogs and cats have been rescued from an animal rescue group in eastern Missouri.
The 195 dogs and cats were taken Tuesday from the group, the St. Francois Society, a no-kill shelter outside Bonne Terre. The animals were brought to the Humane Society of Missouri in St. Louis.
Debbie Hill, vice president of operations for the Humane Society, told The St. Louis Post-Dispatch that it's been several years since such a large rescue was conducted at a licensed rescue group.
Diana Blackwell, who heads the shelter where the animals were taken, disputed that the dogs were not cared for properly. She said her shelter had become overcrowded recently. She said she made plans to move some animals to other states, but officials didn't give her enough time.
