1M gallons of wastewater hits Mo. River

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (AP) - More than 1 million gallons of wastewater was recently released into the Missouri River in St. Joseph.

The state Department of Natural Resources said the release of 1.2 million gallons of partially treated wastewater occurred Friday night when a pump failed in the St. Joseph wastewater treatment system.

The department considers discharges of wastewater from sanitary sewer collection systems to be potential threats to public health. But the DNR said the release Friday would likely not affect drinking water systems downstream because of recent heavy storm runoff and because the wastewater had been partially treated.
