Jefferson City man dies from gunshot wounds

A Jefferson City man who was shot early Saturday died later the same day in a Columbia hospital.

Police report the 24-year-old man, whose identity has not been released, died Saturday afternoon at University Hospital from a gunshot wound to the head.

The Jefferson City Police Department responded to Capital Region Medical Center following the shooting after the victim was transported by private vehicle to the hospital. He was then transferred by helicopter to Columbia.

Police said their investigation began about 3:50 a.m., when they received a number of calls about shots being fired near the intersection of West Dunklin and Broadway streets.

JCPD detectives are continuing to follow leads in this case.
