Commission suggests Cole County surtax deadline

arties would either resolve issue or go to court

The Cole County Commission is looking at setting a deadline to either resolve a dispute over the repayment of surtax funds or to take the matter to court.

The legal battle would be over funds that were inappropriately distributed because of an error in the surtax formula that was made in 1989, resulting in 13 taxing entities being underpaid or overpaid.

Under a three-year statute of limitations, Jefferson City is the taxing entity that is owed the most money (more than $750,000), while the Blair Oaks School District is the taxing entity that owes the most (more than $665,000).
