Trash talk picking up again in Jefferson City
Wednesday, March 9, 2011
With less than a month until Jefferson City voters voice their opinions on the trash and recycling contract the city entered with Allied Waste Services in late 2009, both sides are starting to vie for public support.
The supporters of Proposition A, the Citizens Action Committee Against Ordinance 14487, took advantage of the public comment period of Monday night’s City Council meeting to reach a broader audience.
One of the individuals addressing the council, Michael Brownstein, took umbrage with the confusion about the intent of the supporters of the proposition.

This all needs to be opened up to competition between haulers and the customers directly. Get the city government out of my trash can.
Also, all the city "kickbacks" from Allied need to be removed. Taxpayers should not have to pay for city staffers to get fat off our tax dollars. Burying all the kickbacks into the current contract was deceitful and crooked.
The taxpayers/residents need CHOICES, not one-size-fits-all trash service dictated by the city government.

I agree with your choices statement. If the city wants to use Allied, fine. The merits of competition in that sort of arena can be argued, but I tend to side with the idea that competition improves life in several ways, namely value and service. That being said, Allied should offer more than a one-size-fits-all here. Smaller cans, more money, less service, forced recycling, and in my opinion one very rude informational letter all happened. I will never care for Allied, or our elected representatives who approved this. You have all done something that you know is wrong, yet I'm sure you'll find obscure ways of justifying your actions and decisions so you can move on. Also, if what JC said is true about kickbacks on this, then I'm sure the money helps.
