Mo. House endorses English-only drivers tests

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) - The Missouri House has endorsed legislation to require that drivers' license tests in the state be administered in English.

The state currently offers driver examinations in 12 languages, including English. The legislation approved Tuesday would allow tests only in English or American Sign Language.

Sponsoring Rep. Jerry Nolte, R-Gladstone, says all drivers need to understand English to be able to read road signs and follow driving laws.

Opponents of the bill say it discriminates against new immigrants who have not yet mastered English. Some lawmakers said non-English speakers would still drive, but if the legislation passes they would just do so without a license or insurance.

The bill needs one more House vote before going to the Senate.
