179 to close when work begins around July
The Missouri Department of Transportation has partnered with the City of Jefferson and Cole County to construct a new interchange on Route 179 in Cole County which will provide access to a new St. Mary's Health Center nearby.

Timelines and details about the construction of a new Missouri 179 interchange near the site of a new St. Mary’s Health Center were revealed at a public meeting Tuesday night.
More than 50 people came to the Eagles Club to look at maps and drawings as well as ask questions of both MoDOT and St. Mary’s officials.
The big news of the night was that after work starts, around July 1, the construction of the new interchange will require closing the highway between Edgewood Drive and Route C for about 90 days.

Anyone go to the meeting and find out why? They build overpasses all the time without closing the highway.

That will force lots of traffic to surface streets. Hope law enforcement strictly enforces the speed limit on the affected streets.

they will, the city wants to get all the money they can get.

Don't blame the city if you speed........ take responsibility for your own actions.

well, i guess you never seen cities that have speed traps. ie speed limit posted at 55 then the next speed limit sign is 35, oh by some coincedence there is a cop there.

I love how people break the law then complain when they get caught lol! This is what society has come to "it's everyone elses fault!"

If you don't speed you don't have to worry about getting fined. I have never had a speeding ticket despite traveling thousands of miles a year, must be because I obey the law!

179 closed for 90 frickin days? Who is the contractor? The Federal govt. or the social security administration? LOL With the amount of traffic 179 sees they should build a temporary byway around the construction area. If I remember right Hwy 87 south of California was closed for 3 days when the overpass for the new Hwy 50 was built.

They built the overpass at Militia Dr without closing hwy 50. The built an overpass over hwy 63 toward Columbia without closing 63. They even built hwy 50 over Eastland without closing hwy 50.

If you go to the following website: modot.org/central/ you can attend the online public meeting for the 179 project. Please notice the plans for this 90 day closing are for the interchange to go BELOW the current 179 highway. This means they will have to take out a significant portion of 179 to construct the road and the bridge above the road that will be connected to 179. I believe that is why they are closing that section of road for 90 days.

Just like they did at hwy 50 and Eastland. Except there they built the on/off ramps first and routed traffic on those while they built the bridge and didn't have to close the hwy.

Article states that 179 traffic will be detoured via US 50 and US 54. Sounds like a really interesting time at the tri-level. No information in the article as to why 179 will be closed for such an extended period. Looking at the profile drawings on MODoT's site, it appears that the new access to Mission Dr. will be below 179, meaning that 179 will BE the overpass. Just hope they plan for future growth so as not to have a retrofit as was done at MO Blvd., 179 and US 50 last year.
