More levees overtop, rain storms push water higher

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - A levee in northwest Platte County was overtopping and tributaries were filling up after a line of storms dropped heavy rain on northwest Missouri and water continued flowing at a record pace through northern dams.

Missouri River Levee and Drainage District Association director Tom Waters says Sugar Lake levee was being overtopped Monday morning along a 3-mile stretch, putting farmland and several homes under water.

North of Sugar Lake levee, evacuation orders had been issued for Lewis and Clark Village and the community of Winthrop because of rising water.

Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon was scheduled to be at Rosecrans Air National Guard base near St. Joseph on Monday afternoon to meet with military leaders and get an update on flood-fighting efforts.
