Dear Editor:
The June 20 article on Randy Dignan, pastor of the Bible Baptist Church, contains some errors that are worth correcting.
The article states that "Even the Coca-Cola industry beat the church to the Philippines villages, Dignan said." This is followed by a quote in which Pastor Dignan claims the Filipino people got carbonated soda before the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
Actually, Coca-Cola bottling company was established in the Philippines in the 1920s. The Gospel of Jesus Christ, however, was brought to the archipelago in the 16th century, long before carbonated soda. The Good News was brought to the area by the Catholic Church, which has been proclaiming Christ Jesus for 2,000 years. In fact, records exist for a Christian Mass celebrated in the Philippines as early as Easter Sunday of 1521.
Earlier, the article mentions that "public and Catholic schools welcome foreigners with the Gospel" and that there exists "a hunger - they've experienced the presence of God for the first time." This is followed by a quote from Dignan that they are "tasting something beautiful and wanting to make up for missing it for such a long time."
I am sure that the mention of Catholic schools was inadvertently inserted into a section about missing the presence of God.
Regardless, Catholic schools are built upon the Gospel of Christ and the presence of God is felt each time he is received body, blood, humanity and divinity through the holy Eucharist at Mass.
