CARTHAGE, Mo. (AP) - The Boots Motel that drew visitors for decades as they traveled the iconic Route 66 through southwest Missouri has been purchased in a foreclosure auction.
Hometown Bank, the holder of the note on the motel, repossessed it for $105,000 during a foreclosure auction Wednesday.
The Carthage Press reports that members of Carthage Historic Preservation didn't bid but are planning to discuss options for buying it.
The motel in Carthage opened in 1939 at the intersection of U.S. Highways 66 and 71. John Murphey, a spokesman for the Society for Commercial Archeology, says the motel attracted people from across the country who were interested in Route 66.
Lonnie Heckmaster, president of Hometown Bank, says the bank would consider the historic significance of the Boots when talking to potential buyers.
