19 locals attend Girls State

The 70th session of the American Legion Auxiliary's Missouri Girls State runs through June 25 on the campus of the University of Central Missouri in Warrensburg.

Approximately 750 girls from across the state will take part in the educational program designed to teach constructive attitudes toward the American form of government. The program also includes a staff of 90 volunteers from the Auxiliary.

Girls in their junior year of high school are eligible to attend. Girls write an impromptu essay and the best of these are chosen to be interviewed. Candidates are selected by a committee of local American Legion Auxiliary and these selections are based on leadership, scholastic ability, character, honesty and involvement in school and community activities.

Two girls from Girls State are chosen to attend Girls Nation in Washington, D.C.

Girls are sponsored and administered by the American Legion Auxiliary but also depend on many civic and business organizations for financial support.
