Zweifel launches re-election bid for Missouri treasurer

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) — Missouri Treasurer Clint Zweifel (ZWY'-ful) is running for a second term in office.

Zweifel launched his 2012 re-election campaign Tuesday with an Internet video highlighting how he has tried to save taxpayer money in both big and small ways.

A Democrat, Zweifel was first elected as treasurer in 2008 after spending six years in the Missouri House representing a St. Louis area district. He now lives in Columbia.

Zweifel touted his expansion of a treasurer's program that provides low-interest loans to small businesses and farms and changes to a state-sponsored college savings program. He also successfully pushed for a state law that allows Missouri to earn more interest on money it deposits in local banks.
