Man drowns in NW Mo. river

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (AP) — A 39-year-old man has been drowned after trying to cross the Platte River in northwest Missouri.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol says 39-year-old Osmin Contreras of St. Joseph was last seen crossing the river early Saturday.

Witnesses said the victim was not wearing a life jacket when he was swept off his feet and into deeper water.
