MSP event aimed at entertaining adults, teens

See the Missouri State Penitentiary through the eyes of artists and through lenses of photographers as part of events this weekend.

In “Missouri State Penitentiary: Inside the Walls,” an event in conjunction with the former prison’s 175th anniversary, artists and photographers captured their impressions of the historic landmark last weekend.

Their work will be on display 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday on Lafayette Street, along with booths from other organizations and programs including Restorative Justice and Puppies for Parole.

Friday evening events are geared toward adults with the Prison Break Happy Hour from 5-9 p.m. and an outdoor showing of R-rated “The Shawshank Redemption” from 9-11:30 p.m.

A 5K Run and Walk Foot Race, sponsored by the Fraternal Order of Police, will open events Saturday. Registration begins at 7 a.m. and the foot race begins at 8 a.m. in front of Housing Unit 1.

The upper yard will be filled with prison-related crafts, games and activities 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday.

Tours will be offered on the hour Saturday with the option of buying tickets immediately on site, although advance reservations are recommended.

Additional events continue through Saturday evening with more on Sunday. A full event schedule is posted on the prison tour website.
