Life sentence handed down in camp killing of homeless man

COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) - A 58-year-old man has been sentenced to life in prison for the death of a homeless man at a camp in Columbia.

Ricky Gaddy was sentenced Tuesday after pleading guilty to second-degree murder in the October 2010 death of 55-year-old Jerry Schneider. Gaddy also was sentenced to a concurrent 20-year sentence for armed criminal action.

Another man, 49-year-old Travis G. Birkhead, is scheduled for trial July 13 on second-degree murder and armed criminal action charges.

Police say Schneider was hit in the face with a large piece of concrete before being stabbed.
