KC man gets 24 years in prison for fatal crash

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - A 46-year-old Kansas City man has been sentenced to 24 years in prison for driving drunk and causing a wreck that killed a man and injured three other people.

The Kansas City Star reports Harvey Shoate had been out of prison only 36 hours when his vehicle collided with another car last July 3.

The crash killed 49-year-old Gary Godding of Independence and severely injured his wife and two children.

Prosecutors say Shoate's blood-alcohol content was almost three times the legal limit to drive.

Shoate was sentenced to 12 years on one count of involuntary manslaughter and 12 years each on three counts of second-degree assault. The assault sentences will run concurrently, but consecutively to the manslaughter sentence.
