Friday's American League Capsules

BOSTON (AP) - Carl Crawford blooped a go-ahead, two-run single to center field in the seventh inning and Boston ended a four-game losing streak with an 8-6 victory over Oakland on Friday night.

Boston rallied from a 4-0 deficit in the first inning and were trailing 6-5 when lefty Brian Fuentes came in to face lefty Crawford, who came through with a broken-bat hit just beyond second base.

Joey Devine (0-1) loaded the bases in the seventh on a double by Adrian Gonzalez and then he hit Kevin Youkilis and walked David Ortiz.

Bobby Jenks (2-2) got the win and Jonathan Papelbon pitched a perfect ninth for his 11th save.

Jarrod Saltalamacchia added a solo homer, his fifth of the year, for the Red Sox in the eighth.

The Red Sox ended their longest losing streak since they began the season 0-6. The A's dropped their fourth straight after winning four in a row.

Blue Jays 8, Orioles 4

BALTIMORE (AP) - J.P. Arencibia hit his first career grand slam and Rajai Davis had three hits as Toronto ended a two-game losing streak.

Carlos Villanueva (3-0) allowed two runs and six hits in 5 1-3 innings, walking one. He is 2-0 in three starts since moving into the Toronto rotation from the bullpen.

Arencibia's fifth-inning slam was his ninth homer of the season and gave the Blue Jays a 7-0 lead against Orioles rookie Zach Britton, who has lost three straight decisions after starting the season 5-1.

Toronto has won 21 of 27 games against the Orioles and is 16-3 in its last 19.

J.J. Hardy homered for Baltimore, which has dropped six of seven games to fall five games below .500, matching a season high.

Britton (5-4) allowed seven runs - five earned - and six hits over five innings, his shortest outing.

Rangers 11, Indians 2

CLEVELAND (AP) - Alexi Ogando won his sixth game without a loss and Josh Hamilton and Nelson Cruz homered in a five-run seventh inning for Texas.

Ogando (6-0) held the Indians to one run and four hits in eight innings. He has allowed two runs or fewer in nine of his 11 starts while pitching at least six innings in each outing.

Texas has beaten Cleveland 14 times in the last 17 games between the teams and has won nine of 10 games at Progressive Field. The Rangers have won nine of 12 overall and are 14-8 since May 10.

The Indians have the best record in the American League, but are 13-14 since May 3 and have lost four straight at home.

Elvis Andrus, who had four hits, added a three-run double off Chad Durbin in the eighth. The Rangers had 19 hits, one short of their season high.

Justin Masterson (5-4) allowed four runs in 6 1-3 innings, dropping his fourth straight decision.

White Sox 6, Tigers 4

CHICAGO (AP) - Carlos Quentin hit a three-run homer and Brent Lillibridge added a solo shot to help Chicago.

The White Sox ended a nine-game losing steak against the Tigers and won four straight games for the first time this season. Chicago, which trailed Cleveland by 11 games in the AL Central on May 7, is within seven games.

White Sox starter Mark Buehrle (5-4) pitched six effective innings. He allowed three runs while giving up 10 hits, striking out four with just one walk.

With one out in the eighth, White Sox reliever Matt Thornton gave up three consecutive singles. He was helped by left fielder Juan Pierre, who made a running catch into the left-field fence to take away an extra base hit from Alex Avila. Victor Martinez tagged from third to cut the Chicago lead to 5-4.

After the spectacular catch, Pierre hit a leadoff homer in the eighth to put Chicago up 6-4. It was his first home run since Aug. 3, 2010, against Detroit.

Twins 5, Royals 2

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Carl Pavano earned his 100th career victory and Michael Cuddyer homered for Minnesota.

Pavano (3-5), who was 0-3 with a 5.28 ERA in six May starts, won for the first time since April 24. He held the Royals to two runs and eight hits in his first complete game since Sept. 10, 2010, after throwing seven complete games last year. He threw 83 strikes in 112 pitches.

In his 13th season, Pavano is 100-94 in 270 games - 252 starts for five teams.

Cuddyer homered off Royals rookie left-hander Danny Duffy in the third. It was Cuddyer's 18th career home run against the Royals.

Denard Span drove in Ben Revere and Drew Butera with a two-out double in the second inning. Duffy walked Butera, who was hitting .133, before Span hit a liner over center fielder Melky Cabrera's head.

Duffy (0-1), who was making his fourth big league start, yielded three runs, seven hits and three walks, while striking out three in five innings.

Mariners 7, Rays 0

SEATTLE (AP) - Jason Vargas tossed a four-hitter for the first shutout of his career, and Adam Kennedy and Miguel Olivo hit back-to-back homers for Seattle.

Vargas (4-3) bounced back from two straight poor starts where he failed to get beyond the fifth inning in either. It was the second complete game of his career and first since Aug. 21, 2005, when he was a prospect with Florida.

Andy Sonnanstine (0-2) was already trailing 4-0 when Kennedy and Olivo both hit their fifth homer of the season two pitches apart in the fifth inning. It was the second time this year Seattle has hit consecutive blasts.

Justin Smoak homered in the first inning for Seattle, his 10th of the season.

Only twice did the Rays get a baserunner to second - once on a wild pitch, the other a stolen base - and each was left stranded there.

Angels 3, Yankees 2

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - Jered Weaver tied for the AL lead with his seventh victory - 39 days after getting his sixth - and No. 9 hitter Peter Bourjos singled home the go-ahead run for Los Angeles.
