Your Opinion: Past chairman backs city sales tax

Dear Editor:

As the chairman of the first five of the Jefferson City half-cent sales tax for capital improvements, I encourage residents to support Proposition 1 on Aug. 2. Since 1987, this tax has generated resources for the improvements to streets, sidewalks, bridges, parks and public safety. It has truly made Jefferson City a better place to live and work.

Proposition 1 is a continuation of the sales tax last approved by the voters in 2006. This is not a tax increase but a tax extension.

As in the previous issues, this tax will expire in five years requiring a vote of the people to be extended. The sunset clause has caused the city to provide the projects as promised.

Money generated by Sales Tax F will be spent on public works projects, parks and greenway projects, public safety, economic development and transformation projects.

For the continued betterment of Jefferson City, I encourage the voters to vote yes on Proposition 1 on Aug. 2.
