Alcatel-Lucent makes small 2nd-quarter profit

PARIS (AP) - Alcatel-Lucent SA says it made a small profit in the second quarter after a loss a year earlier, on lower restructuring charges and higher sales of next-generation networking technologies, especially in the U.S. and Asia.

The telecommunications equipment maker said it made a net profit of (euro) 43 million ($62 million) in the second quarter, compared with a net loss of (euro) 184 million a year earlier, when earnings were hobbled by hefty restructuring charges.

The company said Thursday it is on track to achieve a targeted improvement in profitability this year, coming after years of mounting losses from previous management's struggle to merge France's Alcatel with Lucent of the U.S.
