Area man gets probation for fatal accident

A Steedman man has been placed on five years supervised probation for pleading guilty to a second-degree involuntary manslaughter charge in Callaway County Court.

Judge Christine Carpenter sentenced Roger Rudd, 23, Monday.

According to March 17, 2009, reports from the Missouri Highway Patrol, Rudd, then 20, was involved in a fatal crash on Route C near the South Callaway Elementary School, north of Mokane.

The patrol said Rudd was driving north when he passed on a hillcrest and struck a vehicle driven by Austin W. Furlong, 48, Mokane, head-on. Furlong was pronounced dead at the scene.

Unless he was drinking it sounds like an accident..sending him to prison for a bad driving decision? What will that solve? It won't bring the deceased back.
