As a volunteer for the American Heart Association, I would like to thank Gov. Jay Nixon for signing into law HB344 - the Farm-to-Table Bill. The Farm-To-Table Advisory Board is assigned to explore and create opportunities to enable farmers to more easily provide fresh fruits and vegetables to Missouri's Public Schools, as well as state institutions.
Farm-to-School programs connect schools (K-12) and local farms with the objectives of serving healthy meals in school cafeterias, improving student nutrition, providing agriculture, health and nutrition education opportunities, and supporting local and regional farmers.
It's a win/win situation that will help support Missouri farmers and provide students with healthier food options.
It's a great step toward helping to combat the childhood obesity issue in our state.
