Jefferson City council shifts Cirilla’s debate to committee

After weeks of concerns and complaints from several residents, Jefferson City’s Council has decided to have a committee look through city ordinances pertaining to a local shop that, among other things, sells what opponents have described as pornography.

At Monday’s City Council meeting, several residents and members of a local church again voiced their concerns about Cirilla’s, 2215 Missouri Blvd., resulting in council members asking for the Public Safety Committee to place the topic on a future agenda.

Hogwash! Leave the darn business alone. Whatever action, if any, the city council takes against this business they need to apply to every business in town lthat sells similar items.

Oh good grief. What is there to debate?

This town will do anything to try to run off anything that interests younger people who want to have anything fun to do.

Is Jefferson City really this hopeless that it has to harass nearly every small business or entrepreneur who wants to set up a law-abiding, productive, job-generating business in this town to serve its willing and eager customers?

What has to happen to get this horrible non-inclusive attitude changed around here? Bring back that consultant that we had last year and ask him if we should be harrassing Cirilla's. There is a certain group of people in this town that hate diversity, hate younger people, and hate any business that isn't owned by one the elitist families of "historical" Jefferson City.

I am thinking this town is hopeless and it is time to move my family to Columbia, Ashland, or even Wardsville to get out from under the nosy and interferring tentacles of Jefferson City.

you are right, this town will always be hopeless when we are not allowed to expand. We do not even have a Chuckie Cheese here for Kids.. We have to drive to take our kids to Columbia where the real P**N is!

Boy, I tell you, some JC citizens are just too pious to let a business like Cirilla's into the city. I still haven't figured out how the store is damaging the community. It apparently is damaging the holiness of these citizens who seem to think that the slightest thing in this town that does not conform to THEIR standards needs to be run out on a rail.

When I first moved to this area eleven years ago, I was really surprised at how stuffy the town was. My ex told me that JC is a very :"closed" town, seemingly not wanting any kind of progress to occur, whether it be retail or industry. I moved from Sedalia, and they had WAY more restaurants, shops, industries than here. Never thought I'd say Sedalia was progressive, but compared to Jefferson City, it was, and still is.

If the city council caves in to the moral majority who see fit to shut down anything different in this town, and closes Cirilla's, they have no cajones. Let this town grow, not stagnate. What's next--a church on every corner, and all the bars and clubs shut down? Businesses have just a whiff of what might offend the city's "saviors"? Well, then just run 'em out.

Good grief. This town is pathetic.

Hey, JC Chamber of Commerce, this is a legitimate, licensed business. You need to stand up for this enterprise. All of the forums and activities to lure young professionals back to JC can be offset by this type of closed-mindedness. Who in their right mind would consider starting a original type of business in this community? Columbia has got to love this. Historic Jefferson City is going to be just that - History. Beginning to wonder if anyone is going to live here thirty years from now.

I could not agree more with the above post. Jefferson City has continously voted or decided to not allow this city to grow. Boonville is booming with the addition of the river boat. Jefferson city voted against there being one here. A convention center..... For What .... THERE IS NOTHING TO DO IN THIS TOWN. The Lake of the Ozarks, Columbia, Sedalia, Rolla, Fulton. Are all expanding faster than the capitol of this state. This Town needs some serious restructuring.

This will blow over - people will adjust. So long as people are shopping there - actually making purchases, they will be around for a while.

When I first moved to Jefferson City the Capitol of the State of Missouri I was really shocked with the absence of things to such as night clubs, and dance halls with life music...How do we attempt to bring in new business??? Now I am not saying that a pn shop is going to bring in new business except maybe another pn shop...heaven forbid...But maybe a strip bar or 2...Not all of the lawmakers that come to Jefferson City are so old that they have to be into bed at 7:00 PM...Some would like to go out and have a good time with maybe a person of the oppisit sex...Heck this day and age maybe with someone of the same sex...So come on you old foggeys get off your hands...If you want to know what people think...Put it on the ballot...You did with the smoking ban now I can not sit and have a smoke after eating at a resturant...Or having a drink...Then you want to us to let you smoke in your capitol office...Well heck...We will even let you read pn in your office while you smoke...Pass the marijuana law making that leagal in Missouri...Y'all might get re-elected...But don't none of you count on it...So far not one of you in office now is getting my vote...And I know a lot of people feel the same way

Wow. The closed-minded thinking of this town is exactly why my husband and I are selling our house and going elsewhere. It's pathetic how this town refuses to grow with the times and is simply digging their own grave. Those of the council who are actually entertaining the asinine vocal vomit of the religious zealots can't realize they are the reason for this dying City and I hope they are happy when there is nothing left around here except a Wal Mart and a ridiculous over-abundance of Quick Loans and Check Into Cash stores. For god's sake, the store sells toys for sexual enhancement. Apparently these crazy picketers aren't mature enough to let adults live their own lives and realize that not every couple wants a mundane sex life. That being said, I challenge the opposers to answer to this question: Why is it so hard for you people to just let this business run in peace? What are you so afraid of? Or are you intimidated by those who aren’t afraid to explore pleasure with their partners? I despise the church but you don’t see me picketing and trying to find any little loophole to restrict their rights to worship. The religious zealots have the right to praise their god just the same as my husband and I have the right to go to a LEGAL store IN Jefferson City, purchase a toy, and enjoy our Sunday afternoon’s in a way we choose.

Some of these posts are quite a good study in "having your cake and eating it too." You all exercize your freedom of speech by saying that the women in question should NOT have a right to free speech.

No, I think we are saying that this town and the old people in it do not want it to grow and would just as soon see everyone move to Columbia and the Lake.

I moved to JC about a year ago, and as a small business owner, I completely agree with what everyone here is saying. It's not like they have a billboard with a bunch of naked people hanging up in the middle of town. Their sign and shop are discreet as can be. If you don't agree with it, don't shop there. It's as simple as that. In the meantime, JC has an overabundance of smoke shops and title loan companies. We don't have people jumping all over these businesses for attributing to cancer and taking advantage of people in poor financial situations. I'm just completely perplexed by the mindset of these people. This town is on the downhill slide. Talking about progress is one thing, but it seems like JC does a better job of entertaining opinions and ideas that completely undermine the progress that they are "so desperately are trying to achieve."

If sex is so bad, why does Columbia will all of its adult entertainment and shopping have fewer forcible rapes than Jefferson City?

0

dazy1961 1 year, 11 months ago

Sssshhh, gofish...you said the "s" word!!! Don't you know that's a no-no???

Columbia is progressive and happy to grow with many kinds of businesses. JC is not. I don't think they even have a grasp of the concept of progressive. And I have to agree with @apo--there is an overabundance of smoke shops and loan companies. I'm sure they really boost the economy. What about more industries? And I have to laugh every time I hear about the grand plans for a convention center. Why??? When the sidewalks are rolled up at ten, and there are no real entertainment venues for visitors to the city to enjoy?

And now, heaven forbid, a business that caters to discreet adults who want to add some zip to their bedrooms has invaded the city. It's a small business, and I'm sure the employees there are grateful to have jobs in this economy. Shut the business down and throw those people back into the unemployment lines. That sure helps.

JC city council, do the right thing and let Cirilla's be--they're not hurting anyone but the righteous who feel that anything not conforming to their Christian values is evil.

Having an enjoyable sex life with your spouse is a gift from God. He wants us to have good sex and enjoy it.

Oh heck ! Where was the JC Council and these guardians of morality when the Internet came about? Can't believe they allowed such potential for sinnin' in this fair city. Give 'em credit for saving us from digital signs. They did however let tattoo parlors get by 'em. If you decide to leave, don't look back, lest you turn into a pillar of salt.
