Excessive Heat Warning issued through Friday

A dangerous heat wave will intensify across Missouri this week, with afternoon and early evening heat index values ranging from 105 to 115 degrees.

A large area of high pressure will expand from the Plains into the Mississippi River Valley over the next few days, and then maintain firm control over the weather pattern through Friday.

Therefore, the National Weather Service (NWS) has issued an Excessive Heat Warning until 7 p.m. Friday for most of Missouri.

The high levels of heat and humidity will threaten the health of the public, especially the very young, the elderly and those with chronic health problems. The NWS advises not to take the threat lightly. The length of the heat wave is expected to pose a very real and dangerous health risk to at-risk groups and those who do not have access to air conditioning.

Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside. When possible, reschedule strenuous activities to the early morning or the evening. Be aware of the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Wear light weight and loose fitting clothing when possible and drink plenty of water.

The buildup of heat will make heat-related illnesses a threat, especially for those living in homes that do not have air conditioning. People in the warning area are advised to avoid poorly ventilated areas and prolonged work in the sun. Those who don't have air conditioning should keep their homes well ventilated with fans, and try to spend time in air conditioned environments as a break from the heat.
