Reporter spends a night in the slammer
Offers thoughts after being among new jail’s first visitors

I did it. I spent a night in Cole County’s new jail (along with about 89 other civilians) on the first night it was opened to overnight “guests.” And I volunteered to be there.
So did Sally Kurt of St. Louis County. She and her son heard about the “Bed, Breakfast and Bars” plans and traveled to Jefferson City for the experience.
“My son is going to college in California, and this was one of our last mother-son experiences,” she explained.
