Steelman urges GOP to focus on need for fiscal restraint

Even as two credit rating agencies said they're considering lowering the federal government's credit rating, U.S. Senate candidate Sarah Steelman told a Jefferson City audience Republicans should stand firm in the ongoing debate about raising the federal debt ceiling.

"I think we need to cut spending," she said Thursday night. "I think we need to cap the size, and growth, of government - just like we have here in Missouri with the Hancock Amendment ... which says state government can't grow faster than how fast your income is growing."

And, Steelman said, during an hour-long visit with members and guests of the Cole County Tea Party group, "The time has come where we have got to have a balanced budget amendment" to the U.S. Constitution.

"Without some of those systemic changes in the budget process - no, I don't think the Republicans should vote to raise the debt ceiling unless they get those kinds of things included."
