The sign on the inside of the locker room door is counting down the days to the football season opener.

But in actuality, the season has already begun for the Helias Crusaders.

"We treat this camp like the start of our season," first-year head coach Phil Pitts said Thursday morning after the varsity team went through its fourth day of camp at Helias. "So, in essence for us, football season started Monday."

The varsity camp, which will conclude today, featured Helias seniors, juniors and sophomores. Thursday morning's session concentrated on the defensive side of the ball.

"The defense is looking pretty good, we're getting a lot of things down," senior defensive end Logan Booth said.

Pitts, who had served as Helias' defensive coordinator the past few seasons, is pleased with what he's seen so far from the returning Crusaders.

"The kids are here every day working hard," he said. "And we keep telling them the hard work they're putting in now will help us down the road."
